Mental Health Media

Mental Health Media believes in getting across the real story about mental health, told by those who know.

Mental Health Media understands the destructive effect discrimination can have on people’s lives. In a world where prejudice still creates huge barriers for people with mental health problems, it believes discrimination will only be overcome by listening and understanding.

Its projects give people with experience of mental health problems the confidence and resources to challenge discrimination and speak out about their experiences. Its media work includes an annual awards ceremony, the Mental Health Media Awards, which celebrates the best portrayals and most sensitive reporting in print, broadcast and media.

Mental Health Media wants people to listen to the truth about mental health, understand the issues and respond in a positive and informed way.

Mental Health Media’s involvement in Time to Change

  • Its groundbreaking project Open Up has a key role to play in the Time to Change efforts to end mental health discrimination. The project brings people with experience of mental health problems together, to support each other and come up with positive and constructive ways of raising awareness and tackling prejudice.
  • Mental Health Media also brings its expertise in service user involvement to the campaign, gained through many years of work led by people with experience of mental health problems. It knows that the best way to create real change in attitudes towards mental health is for people with first-hand experience of living with such a problem to speak out for themselves.
