About The Sheffield Mind and Body Project Project

The Mind and Body project works with those who experience difficulties with their physical and emotional needs, including people who have previously tried unsuccessfully to make positive changes in their lives.

The project offers a range of services including:

  • a healthy living workshop around mental health
  • groupwork around physical health
  • a ‘Change One Thing’ mentoring service

It also works with providers of community exercise facilities to ensure they are accessible and sensitive to the needs of people with mental health problems, and encourages non-gym activities such as walking.

It aims to improve physical and emotional well-being, to tackle stigma and promote inclusion.

It reaches people from communities that may face difficulty accessing other services, such as people from black and ethnic minority communities. It also works in many deprived areas of the city that have been identified by the primary care trust as having the greatest health inequalities, which include high mental health needs.

How to get involved

The project is open to everyone aged 16 and above.

Type of access (e.g. referral, direct access etc)

  • We offer our workshops to established community groups and tailor them to suit their needs and interests; these are open only to the people already attending the group or service. We also offer open access workshops at public venues, which are open to the general public, requiring no referral.
  • Six week courses are also open to the general public requiring no referral.
  • Anger management is being delivered in partnership with Sheffield PCT and has required a rigorous referral system through the GP service.
  • The “Change One Thing” mentoring service is open to members of the public who are motivated to change their lifestyle but this is mainly being promoted through the healthy living workshops due to capacity issues.

Area covered

  • The project will be delivered in the Flower Estate and Manor and Castle areas of Sheffield.
