I have a range of experiences of being unwell and have experienced a range of responses from others to that unwellness. When somebody contracts a short illness, is temporarily injured or has surgery, society has set ideas about how to respond – namely, send a ‘Get Well’ card.

Mental health problems are often thought of as ‘invisible illnesses’; that is, their effects are not immediately obvious to a stranger. There is a notable exception to this rule, however, and those who are familiar with self-harm are all too readily aware of this.
