Time to Change Director Sue Baker responds to today's article in the Health Service Journal by Lisa Rodrigues, Chief Executive of Sussex Partnership NHS Mental Health Foundation Trust, in which Lisa speaks openly about her experiences of depression and discrimination.

“Lisa's decision to talk openly about her own experiences of mental health problems should be warmly welcomed.

“We know there are many challenges and significant cultural barriers for professionals at all levels within the mental health and health and social care sector to feel they can be open and that this is appropriate.

“I hope this heralds the beginning of a shift of culture where leadership and lived experience of mental health problems are not seen as contradictory but complementary.

“We'd like to see experience of mental health problems more openly discussed within the workforce and the ' them and us' barriers start to fade, which will help to tackle stigma and discrimination reported when people are in contact with services.”
