Northumbria Students' Union prides itself on supporting and representing the diverse needs of an ever changing student population, and the mental health of our students is hugely important. During their studies as many as 1 in 10 students [NUS Mental Distress Survey, May 2013) have thoughts of suicide, which is horrifying. As a result one of the key Union priorities this year is ensuring that our students receive adequate support, and don't feel discriminated against for being open and honest about their mental health issues, no matter how big or small these may be.

We have worked alongside our Student Support and Wellbeing service in order to ensure that our new Nightline service is successful and our volunteers are aware of support available, as well as encouraging student communities to form with a strong mental health agenda. Mental health awareness training has also been made available to all of our reps to make them more confident and aware about the issues faced by students.

Later in the year we will be running a large mental health event around minsfulness, encouraging students to get involved in workshops and to learn more about mental health in students and the community.

Overall, we hope to remove stigma for people who suffer from mental health issues and really improve student lifestyle so that all of our students have the best experience they possibly can here at Northumbria.

On Saturday 5th October Time to Change went to Charlton Athletic Football Club to help them with their commitment to ending mental health stigma.  This was their first ever Mental Health Awareness Day; with a range of activities taking place throughout the stadium grounds.

At the University of Westminster Students’ Union (UWSU) we have a responsibility to our students to make their student experience the best it can be. Consequently, one item that is high up on our agenda as a result of this is mental health.

This year we want to put a plan in place to get students thinking about their own mental health so they can seek help if they need to, but also to raise a general awareness of those around them. At Westminster, we have an incredibly diverse student body, and with the cultural background of a lot of our students, mental health is just not spoken about.

The UWSU has thus far demonstrated its commitment to student wellbeing through its welfare service and also by actively supporting the Student Minds Society, which is a group of students committed to raising mental health awareness and acts as a student voice on mental health in the university.

By the end of this university wide campaign, we want to de-stigmatise mental health issues and get students talking about their mental health, good and bad. The end result will hopefully be an increase in the number of students going to the counselling service or disability services for support, as well as the staff and students at the university having a better understanding and empathy towards people who suffer with mental health problems.
