We’ve seen the story in the BBC about a complex and tragic case involving someone with a personality disorder. We agree with many of our supporters that the reporting around personality disorders is really stigmatising and misleading – which can cause real harm to people living with these mental health problems.
Personality disorders are widely misunderstood and, as with all mental health problems, it’s important that there is accurate and balanced information out there, such as information from Mind and Rethink Mental Illness.
We are contacting the BBC, but if you feel strongly about the article, you can also complain directly – the voices of people directly affected by these issues are extremely powerful in showing how harmful content like this can be. Please also share the above information about personality disorders, to help get accurate information out there.
Update at 13.50pm
Taking on board concerns raised through social media, the BBC have now updated their article to address instances of stigmatising language and provide links to appropriate information on personality disorders.
Thank you to everyone who tweeted about this, the pressure you placed on the BBC was instrumental in affecting this important change and shows just how powerful we can be as one united voice against mental health stigma in the media.
