For some people with mental health problems, sport and physical activity can play a big part in helping them recover and lead a fuller life. With this in mind, we’ve teamed up with the Football Association to put together a toolkit for organisations who want to run sports-based mental health projects.
We want to encourage sports clubs both large and small to include people with mental health problems in their activity, because taking part in sport can be so beneficial to mental health. We want to make coaches and team mates feel confident and comfortable about talking about mental health problems, in the same way that people discuss physical injuries.
The toolkit looks at how to set up and deliver a project, featuring top tips, videos and best practice guides. It provides information for grassroots clubs, mental health professionals, and for coaches and care staff, and also includes links to other helpful resources.
Although it's hosted by the FA, virtually all of the content is suitable for use in other sports. It’s available for people who are running mental health projects in any sport to download and use, although please credit Time to Change if you do.
